Today’s Taipei Times reports that on Friday, the first day when gay marriage registration could be accepted, 526 couples had completed the paperwork - 185 gay couples and 341 lesbian couples.
Re: Taiwan Holds First Same Sex Marriages
I suppose it was bound to happen - but so soon? One of the first gay couples to marry under Taiwan's new law introduced last month has filed papers for divorce! The two boys do not come from cosmopolitan Taipei. They are from the Country of Pintung in the far south of the island. According to the Dept. of Civil Affairs the reason given is "family pressures" as they had not obtained parental approval in advance. Such approval is not required under the Bill but remains a major social pressure among the more conservative families in Taiwan.
