U.S. Dollar Strong against THB

Post by Dodger »

A strong U.S. economy and strengthened dollar finally has impact on THB exchange rate.

Has just gone up from 30.9 to 32.8. (Source: Bangkok Bank Exchange Rates 7/27/18)

Keep going baby!

I agree..... keep going baby but just a little perspective. Recall in October/November 2016 the dollar was at 35.5 and posts on this forum and BP were looking forward to 36 at year's end; and then you know who won the election and the dollar went south. Keep our fingers-crossed for a continued recovery.

A weakening baht is a double-edged sword. I had a shock when I did my weekly supermarket shop the other day. The French marmalade I have used for decades had jumped in price by 12.5%. The Australian cheddar by 10.9%. I have checked different supermarket outlets - same same! Stand by for more price increases on the way.

I'll take the weakening baht over a strengthening baht any day. Maybe there will be some price hikes, but how much marmalade and cheese are you going to buy?

You might have to spend a little more to get certain items, but when I do the math I still come out wayyyyyyy ahead when a weakening baht means thousands more baht in my wallet.

True, but price hikes will certainly not be limited to those two items. Gasoline, virtually all imported goods and things like restaurant bills and air fares where elements of the price are overseas-based are also going to become a bit more expensive. Swings and roundabouts perhaps. Great if your savings are in $s. Lousy if they are in sterling or euros which have seen no gains at all against the Baht in the last few months.

I'm wondering what Trump's trade war may do to prices and exchange rates. I don't understand enough about economics to be able to even guess.

What worries me the most is I don't think Trump understands either.

As a vastly experienced Nancy, I suggest you've invented the last 2 lines - they don't ring true as being original.

Suggest you check your memory.

Lionel Bart was never more than a pretty mediocre lyricist. Whilst a schoolboy I saw my first musical, his show named Blitz. It was the most expensive and one of the most fantastic West End stage productions up to that time but with just average music. And the lyrics? Well this show stopper gives you an idea!

Who's this geezer Hitler?
Who does he think he is?
We'll show that Fuhrer, it's surer than surer
That he will soon get his!

If he was much littler
He would disappear
He's a nasty little basket with a black moustache
And we won't have him here..

He was a paperhanger when he started his career
As Mrs Schicklgruber's only son
Oh, dear Adolf's dropped a clanger if he thinks he's coming here
We don't want any paperhanging done

So...
Who's this geezer Hitler?
etc. etc.
