I read somewhere that Japan has cables above ground because of the earthquakes. It is to complicated to restore broken cables after an earthquake if they are underground.

You might want to give https://imgbb.com/ a try. Simplicity personified. No fee and it provides albums. No popups or ads have appeared as yet.
I only use it for images I want to put in message board topics or emails (Google Picasa is better for long term storage).
