"At 6.50am, on the morning of December 4th, a black pick up truck crashed into a motorbike outside Tuk Com on Pattaya South Road.
The driver failed to stop at the scene and was chased along South Road by many other motorbikes, including taxis.
The driver tried to get away and then crashed, apparently deliberately, into multiple vehicles on Pattaya South at the junction with Third Road (outside Tony’s Gym.)

Two people have been confirmed dead at the scene and twelve are injured, some seriously."

Thank you Jogger.

This story also made it to Pattaya One (with photos): http://pattayaone.news/en/huge-accident ... drunk-man/

The Bangkok Post (with photos): https://www.bangkokpost.com/news/genera ... s-2-killed

I'm not the least bit surprised by what happened. It's rare for more than a few days to go by without a similar story, somewhere in Thailand, involving serious injury and death, caused by a driver under the influence of God-knows-what.

The driver who caused the crash was claiming he is epileptic and had a seizure while driving, sparking off a national debate about whether those diagnosed as epileptic should be permitted to drive.

Now the story has changed. It turns out he tested positive for drugs, although it is not yet known what kind of drugs he used. It is also not known whether he is actually epileptic at all.

This man is in BIG trouble, especially now that he tested positive for drugs. The victims may be in trouble too. If he was driving under the influence of illegal drugs, assuming he even has insurance, the insurance company probably does not have to pay, leaving him personally responsible for paying for all the damage, the medical costs, compensation for the two deaths, etc. The chances that this man has much more money than enough to buy lunch are quite remote and the victims will be stuck with paying their bills themselves.

This man is likely going to prison for a hell of a long time, but that won't be much help to the victims.

Positive drug charge in Pattaya crash

December 6, 2017

The Nation

A man who claimed he had suffered an epileptic seizure that caused him to lose control of his car and kill two people and injure 15 others in Pattaya on Monday was under the influence of drugs at the time, police said yesterday.

Akkaradej Udomrat, 44, will face an additional charge of driving while under the influence after police said traces of amphetamine were found in his urine.

Muang Pattaya superintendent Pol Colonel Apichai Krobphetch said Akkaradej had already been charged with reckless driving, causing others to be killed and injured, and evading arrest. Following the findings of the urine test, he faces an additional charge of driving while under the influence of drugs.

Apichai said Akkaradej had been denied bail and would be detained for 12 days at Pattaya Provincial Court starting today. His claim that he had suffered from epilepsy was awaiting medical confirmation, he said.

“Although we found that his urine contained traces of amphetamine, we still cannot pinpoint which kind of drugs he used and we will have to wait for confirmation from the laboratory,” he said.

Apichai said police had already interrogated 20 witnesses.

The driver has tested positive for methamphetamine use. According to the article, his urine sample is being sent to a more sophisticated lab to test whether it's drug abuse or some sort of medicine to treat his claimed epileptic seizures.

Three guesses what the test results are likely to yield.

I've heard of methamphetamines causing seizures, but I've never heard of them used to treat seizures.

The cost of drug addiction has been affected by the Pattaya driver

Pattaya police have filed an additional charge of drug abuse against the driver of a pick-up truck who rammed his vehicle into a group of motorcyclists and pillion riders, resulting in two deaths and 15 injured in South Pattaya on Monday (Dec 4).

Pol Col Apichai Krobpetch, superintendent of Pattaya City police, said Tuesday that urine test of the 44-year-old driver, Mr Akaradet Udomrat, conducted by Banglamung hospital showed positive for methamphetamine use.

As such, drug abuse charge was filed against the driver, he said, adding however that additional test was required to determine whether the meth found in the urine came from drug abuse or from the medicines the driver took to treat his epileptic seizure.

Mr Akaradet’s urine sample will on Wednesday (Dec 6) be sent to the Royal Thai Police’s laboratory for further tests.

CCTV camera record showed that Mr Akaradet drove in the opposite direction of the traffic when the accident took place. He, however, claimed that he temporarily passed out due to epileptic seizure and didn’t know that his truck rammed into a group of motorcyclists and their pillion riders.

He was initially charged with reckless driving causing deaths and injuries to the other people and driving without regard to the safety of the other people.
