Every year produces a fair number of hit songs. Looking back 50 years, though, 1967 seems to have been one of the greats. It was the year of one of the most lauded of all albums - The Beatles' Sergeant Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band. Some of the songs that attracted my attention -
The Beatles - All You Need is Love and Penny Lane
Frankie Valli Valle - Can't Take My Eyes Off You
The Rolling Stones - Ruby Tuesday
Engelbert Humerdinck - Please Release Me
Dionne Warwick - Alfie
The Seekers - Georgy Girl
The Who - I Can See for Miles
The Mamas and the Papas - Dedicated to the One I Love
Bobby Gentry - Ode to Billy Joe
The Doors - Light My Fire
Tom Jones - Green, Green Grass of Home
Whether or not you liked their candy floss made-for-TV attraction, these boys certainly sold a ton of records including -
The Monkees - Daydream Believer
And for Brits, there were a host of Liverpudlian clone groups including -
Herman's Hermits (although they came from Manchester!) - There's a Kind of Hush
My favourite? It's a toss up between Penny Lane (George Martin's use of a piccolo trumpet near the end was pure genius) and this one (with gratitude to Johann Sebastian Bach)

No Mrs Robinson? I know it wasn't recorded and released til 1968 but the Graduate was released in 1967.

Great song, but I'm afraid it doesn't meet the criteria for 1967. The movie was certainly released in December 1967 but Simon and Garfunkel reworked the song for the commercial recording. That was released in March 1968.
