Illegal operators in South Pattaya told they will have to pay for polluting the sea

Illegal operators in South Pattaya told they will have to pay for polluting the sea

Illegal operators in South Pattaya have been told they will have to take financial responsibility for clearing up the sea at the resort.

The move comes after a damning environment impact report was made public.

At a meeting yesterday the Pattaya authorities told them they were throwing almost 1000 cubic meters of filthy polluted water into the sea every day.

Not only does that have to stop but the businesses have to pay for the clean up and other work like sewage treatment to ensure the resort is made environmentally friendly.

Mayor Anan Charoenchaisri invited 101 South Pattaya businesses such as restaurants, entertainment places, hotels and other firms to the town hall yesterday.

The meeting was held after orders came from Interior Minister Anupong Paojinda to get something done about pollution at the resort.

Anan accepted that the people he had invited were essentially there illegally but moves to evict them since 1998 were still ongoing.

So as a practical measure in the meantime he said that the operators there would have to start paying for the pollution they had caused.

The operators were blamed for tossing 24,000 cubic meters of filth – mostly polluted water – into the sea every month. This was contained in an environment impact study conducted since February.

They were told they had made money from their businesses – now it was time to give back and start paying for the damage.

But despite the tough words the meeting came up with few concrete proposals.

A committee is being set up to do that, reported Siamchon News.

Part of the article says 60-million baht was allocated to clean up the beach pollution and upgrade the water treatment plant. The article also says, "Questions are being asked as to how this money was spent."

Three guesses . . .

Not again – Pattaya “Environmental Disaster Zone II”

No sooner has Pattaya recovered from having the filthiest sea in Thailand than the black sludge and effluent are back.

Now questions are being asked by the media about what happened to a large budget to clean up water treatment at the resort.

What was billed as more of an environmental disaster zone than a high class resort last week, is now back to being a cesspit.

Sophon Cable TV said that yesterday a 300 meter stretch of beach around South Pattaya and the old port area was just as bad as ever.

Shamed into action last week the cleaners of the local authority and the military had been out in force.

Now it looks like they will have to come back to continue to do what many in Pattaya fear will be a recurring theme: “Sticking a plaster on a gaping wound”.

Sophon cable said that the gaping wound is filthy water, pollution and excrement that is pumped into the sea that is just blown back ashore time and again.

They reported that that the area was as bad as ever yesterday and added some caustic comments as toxic as the pollution stating that 60 million baht was meant to have been spent this year on the pollution of the beaches in the area without any results.

This was part of a 27 million baht EEC fund to upgrade the resorts sewage infrastructure topped up to 60 million by the interior ministry.

Questions are being asked as to how this money was spent. Sophon said the work was all meant to have been completed by July.

Beach Traders call it a day as tourists are replaced by dead fish and rubbish

August 1, 2017

So it seems that it’s not just the main Pattaya beach that is suffering at the moment, Jomtien is also feeling the effect of year of neglect.

Tnews reported that deck chair and umbrella operators on Jomtien beach had all gone home as there were virtually no tourists and the place was filthy.

Tnews made a video and took still pictures of the horrible beach covered in bloated dead fish, plastic bags and other rubbish. They reported that the sea was murky and uninviting.

A few tourist stalwarts remained but few seemed to be in the area.

They quoted one unnamed trader as saying there was no point in sticking around as there were no tourists and there was no money to be made.

They blamed the storms and the rubbish pouring out of the city drains into the sea after weeks of heavy rainfall.

Tnews reported that the area hardly resembled the so called “world class resort” that the area has been called by the tourism authorities.

Pattaya beaches seem to be getting worse

October 11, 2017

After several reports appeared in the media regarding the terrible state of Pattaya beaches, it seemed the authorities had put a plan together to deal with the problem, but recent photos tell a very different story.

The latest images are proof that no improvement has been made to the dirty beaches in South Pattaya whatsoever, in fact, there is a strong argument that they have actually got worse.

Both locals and tourists have been complaining about the problem for months, with the mainstream media getting involved too. It was only then that the powers that be down at city hall were forced, for want of a better word, to take action.

Plans were put in place and regular beach clean ups were organised and things were looking up, however, that only lasted a few weeks before the plans were abandoned, just like the beaches again.

It’s not just the tourist that are being effected too. Actually, the tourists are not so much of a problem as they have simply made their way to other more attractive beaches along the coast, such as Bang Saray, which is a short 15-20 minute drive away, or even Sattahip’s beaches, which are in pristine condition due to the fact that they are kept and maintained by the Thai army.

The local business owners and beach vendors however, are the ones in real trouble and they haven’t held back in letting their voices be heard.

I can’t put my finger on what the problem is, whether it’s the authorities not knowing where to start, or not having the slightest idea of how to deal with the problem at all.

Whatever it is, the idea of turning Pattaya in a “World Class Family Resort” is a million miles away at the moment and that doesn’t look like it’s likely to change in the near future either.

In the quest for exercise, I walked along the Jomtien Beach today, Wednesday. Concessionaires were closed of course for "beach cleaning", which was not happening ( never does on Wednesday. Saw it happening on a Tuesday once). Anyway something occured to me: The two "round" public toilets on DongTan Beach are now closed. Also, being Wednesday, the White House toilet was closed. OMG!! No place to pee! Thus, if you go to the beach on Wednesday, be sure a have your swim suit on so you can pollute the ocean!

Did you try Tui's Place? Their restroom is usually available (for a 10 baht fee) and is much cleaner than most others around there. As for polluting the ocean, it for sure is in no need of help getting it even more polluted.

If you actually saw any beach cleaning going on, no matter what day you spotted it, that's more than most of us have ever seen.

"...Jomtien beach which has reportedly turned green and has sent out pungent contaminated smell..."

Could be caused by algae. Green during day, but at night blue fluorescent glow when disturbed. Don't know about the smell.

Yes, let's make Pattaya a perfect family beach holiday destination . . .

One thing is for sure - if I want to go to a beach and while there even consider swimming in the sea, it ain't gonna be here - or anywhere near here. I can think of places I would prefer to spend my afternoons other than a cesspool.

Jomtien beach disaster zone

May 8, 2018

Jomtien beach in Pattaya a virtual disaster zone.

Filthy, stinking black water had turned a one kilometer stretch of the beach into a no go area.

They suggested that the water was poisonous and possibly dangerous to swim in.

Pictures showed the disgusting state of the beach across a very wide area
.
A pipe in the area of the Poo Pen restaurant was disgorging noxious water into the sea turning it a filthy black.

Yesterday a whole army of local officials, coastal resource staff and even the Na Jomtien police were surveying the environmental damage.
Run off from the city after many days of heavy rain has been named as the culprit.

No wonder “tourists fled in all directions” from the stinking mess at Jomtien.
