Massage for medical reasons

Massage for medical reasons

Occasionally, you read on the forums that massage can be beneficial if you have back problems or problems with joints, and a I have a first-hand report from a friend who found massage helpful for his back problems where western medicine was not helpful.

I have problems with my right knee (only after running more than half an hour, this has been going on for years) and went to see a doctor recently. I wonder if forum members have experience with massage alleviating problems with knee joints. If yes, please share (within the board rules regarding medical advice).

You can follow advice that may be forthcoming on this thread if you want to, but do you really think this kind of message board is the place to seek out medical advice? The problem you describe might be an indication of something more serious and simple pain relief might actually mask the actual problem and end up causing you much more severe problems in the future.

Do as you wish, christianpfc, but if you are seeking advice about non-conventional medical treatment, it seems to me this is the wrong place to look for it.

To the best of my knowledge, the only member of this board with years of medical experience is lvdkeyes. If he responds with advice for you, I'd listen to him rather than anyone else.

I have some degenerative arthritis of the spine. The orthopedic surgeon at Samitivej Hospital in Sriracha told me NOT to have Thai massage as it can cause damage to my spine.

Of all the Thai massages I've ever had, none have ever involved stretching of the knee joint or hardly any work (massage) at all on the knee joint itself. Thai massage is essentially a deep massage of the larger muscle groups. So I'm very doubtful that a Thai massage would harm your knee at all but, on the other hand, I'm also doubtful that your problem (knee pain after jogging for a time) would be helped by any Thai massage.

As for your knee pain, nobody obviously needs to tell you to go see a specialist (i.e., orthopedic doctor or whatever). If you've had significant pain and haven't seen a doctor about it already, you're (respectfully stated) already a few fries short of a happy meal.

I often go for traditional Thai and oil massage to the Thai Blind Massage Institute next door to Ganymede. Personally, I like just a massage, without the happy endings. They are well trained, and part of the routine is stretching all of your muscle groups.

Personally, when I have back or joint pain, my treatment of preference is a non-invasive one. Massage, Acupuncture or Chiropractic. Drug therapy is my last choice used only for acute pain of the shoot me kind. Even then, I'll combine it with Acupuncture.

If you are a runner, you may have damaged your knee, and to diagnose that, an MRI and Orthopedic MD may be required.

Fortunately, in Pattaya, there is an English gentleman, schooled in Sports Medicine, Acupuncture, and more. He is at the corner of Soi Bangpot and Pattaya Tai. If you pm me, I'll be glad to come up with his phone number for you. I have been using him for many years for many ailments.

agree with khun GB and lvdk. It's nothing for knee-pains., It may-sometimes, be good for specific back/shoulder probs- my latest steady friend does it great.
Though Thai msg does not kneed knees-it will come with quite forceful stretching of legs/knees, in fact also about any joint,arms/wrists and all that, incl. the finger joints. I always say that i do not want that-but my regular weekly knows it since years.
