Smart phone apps

Post by Gaybutton »

For those of you who own a smart phone, what are your favorite "can't live without" apps?

For me, the following are the ones I would not want to be without and use most often:

1. Droidslater - a free program that translates English words into Thai. It doesn't speak the words, but provides the Thai translation that your Thai friend can read. You can type or speak the word and Droidslater will translate it - accurately. Unfortunately it does not accept Thai words and translate them to English.

2. Drop Box - a free program that allows you to place files from your computer into your phone and vice versa.

3. Juice Defender - a free program that greatly extends the battery life before a recharge is necessary.

4. Lookout - a free program that checks the files in your phone and any incoming files to make sure there are no viruses or other malware.

5. Sygic - An excellent GPS program, with voice, that is constantly updated and has maps available for most countries, including Thailand. This will get you anywhere you want to go. It's not free, but far less expensive than buying a separate GPS and works even better than my Garmin. It even displays Bangkok in 3D. It has a great many features.

6. ThinkFree Office - a free program that performs many of the functions of Microsoft Office and also opens Microsoft Office files that you saved via Drop Box.

7. TouchPal Keyboard - a free program that is an excellent improvement over the standard keyboard and accepts voice for writing messages - both for text messages and Email.

8. Vlingo - a free program that will read aloud text messages and Email you receive. Easy to turn on and off. It also accepts a multiple set of voice commands.

9. Wongnai - a free program for Thailand that finds and gives comprehensive details about restaurants in the vicinity of wherever you are in Thailand. It uses GPS to locate your position and takes it from there. It is updated with new listings regularly.

Those are mine. What are yours?

I use QuikDict on my iphone. The bf uses it, but his iphone3g has the Thai keyboard and English installed and can be toggled between the two. He can translate from Thai to English and English to Thai. My iphone doesn't have the Thai keyboard installed because I don't know the Thai alphabet. This is the most useful app I have and I am always using it. Here's more info.

I also use the SuperRichTH app to get one of the best exchange rates offered by SuperRich. I have a different method of getting Thai baht, but it helps me keep track of things.

The Map app, which comes installed on the iPhone works great in Bangkok and I used it to walk to the US Embassy yesterday. You just tell it where you want to go. You don't even have to know the address. If you want to walk to Vincent's 7 Rooms, you just type it in and it gets you there! I understand the app is even better in the iphone5.

I also have Appbox Pro, which calls itself the Swiss Army knife for your digital life. Very useful utility for the iPhone.

I too have dropbox, but haven't had a chance to use it, yet.
