Although I'm a-religious, I thought this was a significant piece of news.
It was reported in the news recently that the newly elected leader of the United Church of Canada is gay. Gary Paterson beat out 15 other contenders for the moderator's position. According to United Church statistics for 2008, there are about 525,000 members and 2.8 million adherents making it the 2nd largest church in Canada behind the Catholics.

I will have to add that to my list of ammo used when arguing with irreligious Right. I always point out that many religions do not share their barbarian beliefs. Not sure why they think I am hostile to all religions.
