#1 Osaka Airport Closed

Postby fountainhall » Wed Sep 05, 2018 10:04 am

If you have a trip to Osaka in the next few days or are on one of many flights transiting Osaka's Kansai airport, be prepared for possible rerouting. One of the results of Typhoon Jebi, the most powerful to hit Japan for 25 years, was pushing a tanker against the bridge that is the only surface link between the airport to the mainland. The bridge was damaged and so traffic cannot get to and from the airport. Kansai is Japan's only airport operating 24 hours each day and the nation's key cargo hub. JAL and ANA have so far cancelled hundreds of passenger flights. Separately, the airport basement was flooded and one runway covered in water.

Around 5,000 passengers and staff are being evacuated from the airport by ships and barges.

Video showing the destruction off part of the road link to the mainland and the airport underwater.

Kansai airport is constructed on pretty unstable clay and has been sinking at a faster rate that the planners expected. It is basically held in position by hundreds of jacks which are monitored daily and adjusted to keep it all stable - and above water!
