Now VISA has had a failure in its network that has left millions unable to pay using their cards. Most of the cards involved are in Europe, but some problems were reported in the USA. The failure occurred yesterday shortly after 2:30 pm UK time. The problem affected the authorisation from VISA when a card was being used. ATM transactions were not affected. It has still not been fixed and VISA has only announced that the fault is a result of a hardware problem. Most services were working within 5 hours, but not all.
I used a VISA card to book a hotel in the late afternoon yesterday without problem. But that was before 12:30 pm UK time. And the question surely must be why such a problem can occur in this day and age in such a widely-used financial service when no one affected knew if the fault lay with the customer, the merchant, the bank or VISA?
The increasing use of technology in financial dealings does concern me. I see so many people, especially young people, nowadays pay using their phones. I would never dare have any payment system on my phone. But then I am no doubt old-fashioned!

VISA has announced its systems are all back to normal. But customers who used their VISA card during the blackout and were denied service must check their bank accounts. Although a large number of cards were declined, the payments were debited from their bank accounts. A man who had tried to place a deposit of £10,000 on a new car and had it declined found the amount debited from his account. A lady in London had tried three times to pay for a coat costing £358 and now finds £1,074 has been deducted from her account. I wonder how long it will take them all to get properly refunded.
