The Philippines best-known holiday island, Boracay, with its pristine white beaches has been a magnet for tourists for years. Now, on the orders of the country's President, the island is being closed to tourists for the next 6 months. This time mad dog Duterte may have good reason for his action. In February he blasted hotels, restaurants and other businesses for turning the island into a "cesspool" as a result of dumping raw sewage into the surrounding sea. The environment ministry claims that 195 businesses and 4,000 residents are not connected to sewer lines.
Boracay has 500 hotels and their 2 million guests each year generate more than US$1 billion in tourism revenues.
