Florida finally passed gun control legislation and the governor signed it into law. What's NRA's response? They're filing a lawsuit in hopes of blocking the legislation from taking effect, saying the legislation violates the Second Amendment.

NRA. National Rifle Association. To me NRA also stands for Nauseating Rifle Assholes.

NRA sues Florida over gun law that raises minimum age to buy firearms

March 9, 2018

The National Rifle Association has filed a federal lawsuit over gun control legislation Florida Gov. Rick Scott has signed, saying it violates the Second Amendment by raising the age to buy guns from 18 to 21. The new measures come in the wake of the Feb. 14 shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, that killed 17 people.

The lawsuit came just hours after Gov. Scott, a Republican, signed the compromise bill Friday afternoon. It was passed by the House and Senate earlier this week.

Lawyers for the NRA want a federal judge to block the new age restriction from taking effect. The new legislation raises the minimum age to buy rifles from 18 to 21.

The bill, which provides new mental health programs for schools and provisions to keep guns away from people who show signs of mental illness or violent behavior, CBS Tallahassee affiliate WCTV reports. It extends a three-day waiting period for handgun purchases to include long guns and bump stocks that allow guns to mimic fully automatic fire.

The legislation also includes a controversial provision, which would allow "dual role" teachers - teachers who have a role in the school outside of the classroom, such as a coach - or others with military or law enforcement background, to volunteer to carry a weapon on school campuses.

Andrew Pollack, whose daughter Meadow was among those killed at the high scool, pushed for the controversial provision, which is named for coach Aaron Feis, who died charging the gunman, WCTV reports.

"He almost got this guy, cause I know someone who saw it on video," Pollack said. "Just one second difference, this coach Feis could have grabbed this piece of garbage. He would have got him."

I rather like Neanderthal Rectal Ablutions!

These supreme idiots have now nailed their colours to the mast. Given the feelings of the times, I hope they lose big. That may then open the gates to more gun regulations.

Just watching some of the news from the Pennsylvania congressional election campaign. Both candidates at some pains to point out how much they love guns and nobody gonna take our guns. Protests over now are they?

Not hardly. Kids are out all over the country today leaving Class for 17 minutes to demand changes for their safety . They are not going away and can't wait to see their March on Washington on the 24th.

Of course a few idiot schools actually said they might punish any students who waked out of class. The Principals of those schools must be related to Dump!

WHEN WILL IT EVER END?

Another high school shooting has occurred. It happened only a very short time before this post, so for the moment details are sketchy. Apparently there were no immediate fatalities, but serious injuries have occurred. The shooter is reported to be among the injured and, along with one other student, is in critical condition.

2 students shot at Great Mills, Maryland, high school; gunman wounded

March 20, 2018

Two students at a Maryland high school were shot Tuesday after a classmate opened fire in the hallway just before the start of classes, authorities said.

Great Mills High School remained on lockdown after the shooting was "contained" when a school resource officer "engaged" the gunman, St. Mary's County Sheriff Tim Cameron told NBC Washington.

The chaos unfolded before 8 a.m. ET when the gunman walked into the 1,600-student school and fired a round at a female student, also hitting a male student.

The school resource officer was alerted to the gunfire and "quickly" confronted the gunman, according to Cameron said.

The officer fired "at least a round at the shooter, and I believe the shooter also fired a round," Cameron said, adding, "This is your worst nightmare."

The gunman and the female victim were hospitalized and listed in critical condition. The male victim was critically injured but stable. The officer was not wounded. All high schools in St. Mary's County are staffed with an armed deputy sheriff who works as a school resource officer.

Agents with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives also responded to the scene, which is around 70 miles south of Washington.

Students were taken by bus to a nearby high school to be reunited with panicked parents.

Terrence Rhames, a senior at Great Mills, said he and his friends were talking before class when they heard the pop of a loud gunshot.

"I heard one shot and when we ran, we saw a teacher and he was looking at us with a confused look," Rhames said. "We were trying to figure out if this is real."

He said students raced for the exits and called their parents.

"It was just shocking. You hear about shootings you never think would happen to you," Rhames said.

The incident came ahead of Saturday's national March For Our Lives rally against gun violence following the mass shooting at Parkland, Florida, high school last month.

Students at Great Mills High School participated in last week's National School Walkout that honored the 17 victims of the Parkland shooting.

Emma González, a Parkland senior and activist, tweeted to Great Mills students on Tuesday morning that "we are Here for you."

House Minority Whip Steny Hoyer, D-Md., told NBC Washington that he was "sickened" to hear of another school shooting, this time in his district.

Across the country, "we've had 16 school shootings since the beginning of the year, just about one a week," Hoyer said. "It's unacceptable. We need to take action."

The White House this month said it will propose funding firearms training for school personnel and bolster firearm background checks, but steered clear of a previous idea floated by President Donald Trump to raise the minimum legal age to buy semiautomatic weapons from 18 to 21.

The state of Maryland prohibits anyone under the age of 21 from having certain firearms, such as handguns or assault weapons.

Shooting reported at Maryland high school, sparking lockdown

Mar 20, 2018

GREAT MILLS, Md. -- A shooting at a Maryland high school caused injuries Tuesday morning, and the campus was on lockdown as deputies and federal agents converged on the crime scene. St. Mary's County Sheriff Tim Cameron said a student shot another student in a hallway, according to CBS affiliate WUSA-TV.

A school resource officer exchanged shots with the shooter, the sheriff said. The shooter and the injured student were in critical condition. Another injured student was listed in critical but stable condition, WUSA-TV reports.

The St. Mary's County Public Schools said the situation was "contained" after the shooting at Great Mills High School, which has about 1,600 students and is near the Patuxent River Naval Air Station, about 65 miles southeast of Washington.

Student Mollie Davis told CBS News over Twitter that she heard what sounded like a loud balloon pop.

"I was in my classroom and heard everyone screaming," Mollie said. "I've never heard people sound so scared."

Police officers told students that the threat was over and the school would be evacuated soon, the student said.

The Baltimore Sun reported that a student said the shooting happened around 8 a.m. Terrence Rhames, 18, told the Sun that he heard a gunshot and saw a girl fall as he ran for an exit. "I just thank god I'm safe," Rhames said. "I just want to know who did it and who got injured."

The county sheriff said deputies were on the scene and told parents or guardians to stay away, urging them to go instead to Leonardtown High School to reunite with Great Mills students there. The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives tweeted that its agents are going to the scene. FBI agents were also responding to the school.

Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan and Rep. Steny Hoyer tweeted that they're monitoring reports and urged people to follow the instructions of local law enforcement at the scene.

Sheriff: Md. high school gunman had "prior relationship" with victim

Mar 20, 2018

GREAT MILLS, Md. -- A teenager with a handgun opened fire inside his Maryland high school Tuesday before he was fatally wounded during a confrontation with a school resource officer, a sheriff said. Deputies and federal agents converged on the crime scene at Great Mills High School, about 65 miles southeast of Washington.

It wasn't immediately clear whether the shooter took his own life or was killed by the officer's bullet, St. Mary's County Sheriff Tim Cameron said.

A 16-year-old girl was hospitalized with a life-threatening wound, the sheriff said, and a 14-year-old boy also suffered a gunshot wound to the thigh. He was in good condition. The officer, who doubles as a SWAT team member, was unharmed.

Cameron identified the suspect as 17-year-old student Austin Wyatt Rollins. He said Rollins used a Glock semiautomatic handgun to shoot the girl, who he had a prior relationship with.

A school resource officer, Deputy First Class Blaine Gaskill, then faced off with the shooter, the sheriff said. Each fired one shot simultaneously. Cameron said the gunman later died from his wounds. He said that the investigation would determine whether the round the officer fired hit the shooter.

Cameron said he didn't know the nature or extent of the relationship between the suspect and the girl. Investigators are working to determine whether that was part of the motive.

"This is something that we train, practice, and in reality we hope would never come to fruition, it is our worst nightmare," Cameron said at a press conference Tuesday.

Responding to a question from CBS News' Jeff Pegues, Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan said it's possible the actions of the school resource officer may have saved others' lives.

"It sure sounds like this is exactly the way it should have been handled," Hogan said.

St. Mary's schools superintendent James Smith also praised the actions of the school resource officer, as well as first responders and school staff. He said the county has re-engaged in a conversation about school safety after the school shooting that left 17 dead last month in Parkland, Fla.

"If you don't think this can't happen at your school, you are sadly mistaken," Smith said.

Officers in St. Mary's have undergone additional training to prepare individual officers to confront shooters, according to Cameron. He said that while he couldn't speak to the shooter's motive or target, "What we do know is the [school resource officer] did his job, engaged, and stopped the potential threat."

Politicians responded swiftly, acknowledging that this shooting increases the pressure for action against gun violence as anger swells nationwide over the Parkland killings by a teenager with an assault weapon.

However in this case, it appeared that the shooter had illegally possessed the gun. In Maryland, a person must be 21 to possess a handgun, unless carrying one is required for employment.

Agents with the FBI and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives joined deputies at Great Mills High School as students endured a lengthy lockdown, cowering inside classrooms and a locker room while officers worked to make sure there were no more threats on campus.

Police eventually kicked in the locker room door, said Ziyanna Williams, a 14-year-old ninth-grader.

"They came in with guns, and they probably thought there might be another shooter, of course," she said. "About an hour or two later they came -- more police came -- and told us they would search us and search our bags and stuff."

Eventually, the students were escorted outside.

The school has about 1,600 students and is near the Patuxent River Naval Air Station. On Tuesday, ambulances, firetrucks and other emergency vehicles crowded the parking lot and the street outside, where about 20 school buses lined up in the rain to take students to nearby Leonardtown High School to be picked up by their parents.

Democratic Rep. Steny Hoyer said the officer at the school "answered the call this morning with swiftness, professionalism, and courage." He said it's now for Congress to take action.

"We sympathize. We empathize. We have moments of silence. But we don't have action," Hoyer said. "Wringing our hands is not enough."

Lin-Manuel Miranda and Ben have put together 2 of their songs as an anthem for the student marchers this Saturday. The lyrics are beautiful.

"39 Days": Behind the scenes with Parkland students from the massacre to the march

March 22, 2018

CBS News journalists, embedded with survivors of the Parkland, Florida school shooting, take viewers inside the creation of a movement as students turn grief into action in "39 Days", a one-hour documentary to be broadcast March 24, 2018 at 8 p.m. ET/PT on CBS.

In the days after a former student at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School shot and killed 17 people, CBS News began following a group of students who banded together to fight back. They set out to let the world know immediate change is needed to save lives. The documentary captures students' raw emotions as they grieve and work around the clock in an effort to change the gun laws of this country.

"We're trying to get people to stop dying," says student Emma González.

Journalists were also embedded with Andrew Pollack, whose daughter Meadow was killed in the shooting. Pollack's searing and powerful speech at the White House has made him one of the most visible of the victims' parents.

"It should've been one school shooting and we should have fixed it," Pollack told President Donald Trump that day. "And I'm pissed, because my daughter I'm not going to see again."

Pollack says the focus should be on tightening school safety, not changing gun laws.

"It's great that the kids are out there together and that they have a voice," Pollack says. "I would tell them to focus their energy on something that's achievable that we could accomplish right now. What we need right now in this country is school safety."

His mission, he says, is to make schools as secure as courthouses and airports.

"Her presence is keeping me strong," says Pollack of his daughter, "to fight this cause, to keep the schools – we just gotta make 'em safe. That's all I want."

"39 Days" also includes strong voices from the Second Amendment conversation. The documentary presents a timeline of the tumultuous events from the first day of the shooting to the "March for Our Lives," which will take place in Washington, D.C. and cities around the country. The documentary will also feature reports from on the ground at the marches.

"Seventeen people. My peers, my teachers, they died," says student activist Delaney Tarr. "Ultimately, the only way I feel I can really heal is if I try to make a difference."

"39 Days" is produced by the team at "48 Hours" and "CBS This Morning."

Additionally, CBS News will provide extensive multi-platform coverage of the "March for Our Lives" beginning with "CBS This Morning: Saturday" and continuing on CBSN, CBS News' digital streaming news network, on the "CBS Weekend News," online at http://CBSNews.com and on CBS News Radio. Also, "CBS Sunday Morning" and "Face The Nation" will have reports on Sunday, March 25.

Yet another school shooting - in Florida. The shooter is in custody. There was only one victim, who is alive and was shot in the ankle.

At the time of this post this is breaking news. I'm sure much more news will soon follow. At least nobody was killed this time.

Ocala, Florida school shooting: 1 injured; suspect in custody

OCALA , Fla. -- One student shot another in the ankle at a Florida high school and a suspect is in custody, authorities said Friday. CBS affiliate WKMG reports the shooting happened Friday morning at Forest High School, which was put on lockdown. The injured student was taken to a local hospital for treatment.

Police say the suspected shooter is also a student at the school. His age was not immediately available.

The shooting happened as students around the country prepared to walk out to protest gun violence on the anniversary of the massacre at Colorado's Columbine High School.

Chris Oliver said his 16-year-old son, a Forest student, told him the shooting happened near his classroom. The boy told Oliver the shooter was standing in a hallway and shot at a closed classroom door. The shooter then dropped an unspecified weapon, ran and tried to hide, the boy told his father.

All students were being taken by bus to First Baptist Church of Ocala, where parents can pick them up, officials said.

School district spokesman Kevin Christian sent a recorded phone message to parents by phone urging them to stay away from the school.

"We are asking the citizens to avoid the area," deputies said on Facebook, according to WKMG. "Parents please stand by for further direction from the school on how to pick up your children."

Forest High has an enrollment of more than 2,000 students, according to the National Center for Education Statistics.

The shooting comes on the same day many schools across the country are holding walkouts to protest gun violence. The Columbine High School shooting occurred on April 20, 1999.

And this week's loser is Texas. Santa Fe High School Houston. No count on the number of victims as yet but just another day at a US high school. 22nd school shooting of the year so far, an average of one a week.
