Will Qatar Airlines Mandatory Rerouting Affect You?

Post by fountainhall »

A lot of visitors to Thailand take one of the Gulf Airlines, with Qatar having several flights a day. With several Middle East countries having now broken off diplomatic relations with Qatar because it is alleged to support terrorism, their airspace has also been closed to Qatar Airlines. The countries are Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates, Egypt, Yemen, Bahrain, Libya and the Maldives. The closure of airspace is likely to have only a minor effect on travellers from northern Europe since Qatar's routing tends to avoid most of Saudi Arabia anyway. And between Doha and Bangkok there is just a requirement to get around the tiny UAE. But flights from southern Europe and Africa are likely to be considerably longer as long as the dispute remains. Kuwait has offered to negotiate a way round the crisis.

Zero effect on me, since I don't fly with them or anyone else in that region.
I prefer to fly direct. If I had to go indirect, I would choose a civilized hub like Singapore or Amsterdam.
