The End of Liberalism
The BBC aired a program sighting the election of Trump and the brexit vote coupled with a rise of popularism marked a huge changed in leanings of working class people as they have become dissatisfied with the democratic party and the British labor party as well as working class European folk questioning the status quo of the European Union. All this at a time when income disparity widdens. The great social programs of F.D.R. and the British labor party are now at risk potentially hurting the very people that insured a Trump win and brexit. The trickle down theory of Raganomics and Thatcher's anti union policies only ehanced the wealth of the elite and weakend the poor and working class.

Re: The End of Liberalism
What great social programmes of the British Labour party?
All they have ever done is spent recklessly and subsidised the willfully idle.
Gordon Brown borrowed 3% of gdp in the good years, rising to 11% when he finished
The previous Labour administration in the 1970s required an IMF bail out.
Attempting to bankrupt the country is no great social programme.
As for criticizing Mrs Thatchers anti-union policies, well these were necessary to create the conditions for inward investment. When she was in charge, we actually had some new factories built.
Just what I would expect from the lefties at the BBC. Perhaps I should stop paying the TV licence in protest.

If one likes, a similar argument can be made for the U.S. Social Security system, Unemployment insurance, Medicare, Medicaid and social welfare and how the funding of these programs burdens the national debt.Jun wrote:What great social programmes of the British Labour party?

In the case of the US, it seems the more right wing of the 2 parties has been the most irresponsible in running up debt. Quite different to the UK.
Also, in the UK social security has arguably gone too far, as there are generations of people who have no intention of working since they get too much social security. Worst of all, they even think they're entitled to it (=living off the back of decent working people).
