In 1958 a friend of mine's parents bought a 3 BR 2 BA brick house on a corner double lot and paid $18,000 for it. My mother said, "OMG, how will they ever pay for that house?"

My father was like that too. And it rubbed off on me! To this day I still get upset if the lights are left on in a room nobody is in. Damn! Just last night I was in a restaurant and went to use the restroom. When I was done I consciously made sure to turn off the light even though it was already on when I went in.

and in 1958 Tom Watson, then IBM chairman, said: "I think there is a world market for about five computers."

I've got three at my place - I don't know who has the other two!

What a relief! So my father and I are not the only persons who switch off a light that nobody needs! Due to being only 30 years old and having lived with 3 different currencies (Deutsche Mark for Eastern Germany, for united Germany, now Euro), I can't tell what got how much more expensive. Except for postage, I think sending a parcel in Germany became 2 or 3 times more expensive during the last ten year. The newest invention is a addional fee for diesel, because the delivery cars run on diesel!
