Korean Pop Singer Supports Korea’s LGBT Community

Post by fountainhall »

In the aggressively male world of the K-Pop Boy bands, despite their often feminine looks, one stands out. Jo Kwon graduated as lead singer of 2AM to become a solo singer and actor. Although his career is currently on hold, LGBT fans cannot thank him enough for his support for the LGBT community on Twitter.

The singer is currently serving in the military after enlisting earlier this month to fulfil South Korea’s mandatory military service requirement, but his online presence is stronger than ever. This is due in large part to his willingness to voice support for sexual minorities -- a rare bold move in the K-pop world.

In one of the recent tweets on his rainbow emoji-filled page, which has more than 1.2 million followers, Kwon featured a poster for the film “Boy Erased,” about a boy who is forced to take part in a “conversion therapy” program.

Jo Kwon has often shocked audiences by appearing in gender-bending performances. In 2012 he took part in a TV programme wearing 19.5 centimeter heels. Often he has appeared in drag.

Last year Jo Kwon tweeted this –
“I was born this way. don’t be a drag just be a queen/king”
But he remains hugely popular with millions of fans. He is rumoured not to be gay and has a girlfriend (well, that’s what various magazines claim)!
