New Zealand quashes last Gay Convictions

Post by fountainhall »

The New Zealand parliament has passed legislation erasing historic convictions for those found guilty of consensual gay sex prior to its decriminalisation in 1986. The Justice Minister apologized to all “affected by the prejudice, stigma and other negative effects caused by convictions for historical homosexual offenses.”

New Zealand was the first country in the Asia-Pacific region to legalize same-sex marriage in 2013.

Last year Britain enacted what was termed the “Turing Law” giving a blanket posthumous pardon to around 50,000 men similarly convicted. After decades of attempts by an increasing number of citizens, Turing finally received a Royal Pardon in 2013.
