Communists do what Communists do. They consolidate power and make sure there are no individual rights except what they deign to give.

The World should be aware of Autocrat Xi and his Ambitions.

I'm not really surprised. I've been watching a prog called Undercover High. Basically showing life in a US High School in Topeka. Seems to me there's not an awful lot of learning going on. Students sitting around chatting and texting online and just about doing anything other than listening to the teachers. I know it's only a snapshot we are seeing but there doesn't even seem to be any kind of structure to lessons either. Certainly nothing like school as I remember it in UK. Maybe that is all changed now too, I don't know. Can't be surprised that these kids leave school still as thick as shite and willing to vote for some muppet because they see him on the likes of twitter.

Believe me when I tell very few 18-24 year olds voted for Trump. Many more of them are likely to vote in the mid-term as they are beginning to realize their futures are at risk under Dump and the Republicans.

That and currently the under 40's and especially women are energized to throw the Republicans out.

Imagine Idiot Ted Cruz is in serious jeopardy of losing his election for the Senate in Texas . How sweet that would be!

Similarly, many youngsters in the UK rush out and vote for Jeremy Corbyn, who is a leftie socialist who admires the regime in Venezuela. I imagine very few of these youngsters take the trouble to check on the performance of the last UK left wing government in the 1970s (IMF bail out required) or try & count the number of countries with a successful state controlled socialist economy.

Not enough education & not enough thinking going on in our countries.

There are a couple of further points which destabilize our democracies. Firstly, there is no obligation for parties to balance the books, so long term debts can build up. When it eventually goes wrong like Greece, that's when the extremist parties are more likely to get elected.

As Charlie Munger said: I shouldn't worry too much. Germany was broke in the 1920s with hyperinflation. They introduced a new currency &
economic reforms, so by 1939, they were the most powerful country in Europe.

Then the second point, we allow any old idiot to be elected as leader. So we consistently get politicians with no management experience & zero business nouse suddenly running the entire country. Singapore shows how it should be done, with a list of criteria that a potential president should satisfy. Including having held a top management role at company meeting certain criteria (or some equivalent levels). I doubt Gordon Brown, Teresa May, George W or even Donald T would be anywhere near meeting their criteria.

Of course, people in China don't get to vote, so it's more difficult to resist a dictator trying to claim the job for life.
As for the Russians, well they didn't get rid of Putin when they had the chance & now Russia is a dictatorship with sham elections. The people of Turkey appear to have made a similar mistake at the last elections.

Finally, against this backdrop of increasing instability, the idiot politicians of Europe spend almost nothing on defence. So next time there is a war, we shall be under armed & hoping the US will come to our aid.

The US has been quite generous in propping up NATO, but not all politicians in the US support this generosity & in 1939, of course the US stayed out of it until the Japanese forced the issue in 1941.

My favorite movie of the last year Darkest Hour certainly showed FDR to be a jerk when Churchill called for help . Since the war was just over when I was born, I don't remember my taught history and the movie will spur me to read up on US refusal to help GB.

Similar effect as Corbyn shown to be easily winning the internet brigade. That said, I don't care if they do vote for Corbyn. My contempt for the Tories is such that I'd sooner they vote for Daffy Duck than that vermin.

That would be a tragedy of epic proportions. He might have to go out and work for a living. I hear Walmart is hiring entrance door greeters . . .

I haven't seen the movie and cannot claim any greater knowledge of that particular period of history. By from memory, if the movie portrays Roosevelt as a jerk, then it must surely have been incorrect. Roosevelt had campaigned for re-election in 1940 with the strongest of promises that he would keep the USA out of the War in Europe. Once in office Congress was in no mood to change that course. However, when Churchill begged for assistance, Roosevelt had the Lend Lease Act implemented. Without the supplies and equipment supplied by the USA it is unlikely Britain could have lasted until the USA finally entered the war. Churchill and Roosevelt had a very strong relationship. As Churchill later wrote -

"I felt I was in contact with a very great man who was also a warm-hearted friend and the foremost champion of the high causes which we served."
