Bali: Fears that Mt. Agung Might Erupt

Post by fountainhall »

10,000 villagers in the vicinity of Bali's iconic 3,000 m. Mt. Agung have fled their homes as a "tremendous increase" in seismic activity indicates the volcano might be on the point of erupting. The seismic alert has now been issued three times this week. Tourists are being advised to stay at least 7.5 miles away from the mountain. The last eruption was in 1963 when 1,100 were killed and ash was hurled 6 miles into the sky. But it is relatively far from the main tourist spots like Kuta (45 miles away). More of a concern will be the disruption to flights as a result of the ash cloud if an eruption occurs.

Equally, tourists there or planning to visit the island should double-check their travel insurance.

One of the most beautiful places on a beautiful island. The Balinese are so generous and dignified; it grieves me to think of the anxiety some of them must be enduring.

P and I will never forget a lunch we had in a restaurant facing the mountain. A magnificent view. And it is place of fear rather than beauty.

There have now been two minor eruptions from Mt. Agung this past week. Yesterday evening many flights in and out of Bali were cancelled and the airlines given a "red" warning to avoid the area because of the presence of volcanic ash which rose to a height of around 4,000 meters. Today's flights seem to have returned to normal, although neighbouring Lombok's airport has been closed to all flights. There has been no extension of the exclusion zone around the mountain. Travellers to the island are advised to check with their airlines about future flights.
