Indonesia Minister wants to "crack down" on gays

Post by jason105 »

Just read a disturbing article that reports new discriminatory actions against LGBT people in Indonesia.
Apparently they are banning things such as pictures of gay people embracing and the rainbow flag.
This is not good news.

What's up with Indonesia.
Just found another anti-gay article in Gay Star News:
It's short so here it is.

"The mayor of the Indonesian city of Tangerang has claimed milk formula and instant noodles can make babies gay.
Arief R Wismansyah made the comments at a city-run pregnancy seminar on Tuesday (24 February).
‘To create Indonesian children that are healthy smart and competitive, the most important thing is, from the beginning, to provide them adequate nutrition, especially breastfeeding,’ he was quoted as saying by Coconuts Jakarta.
Wismansyah said nowadays parents were so busy that they often only fed their children formula and instant foods, which could have a permanent negative effect on their child’s development.
‘So, it’s no wonder that recently there are more LGBT,’ he said.
Wismansyah’s claim is the most recent in a spate of anti-gay rhetoric in the Southeast Asian country.
Earlier this week, Indonesia’s defense minister said the LGBTI movement was more dangerous than nuclear warfare.
And in January, the minister of research, technology and higher education called for LGBTI students to be banned from universities.
Gay sex is not a crime in Indonesia, except in Sharia-ruled Aceh province, but remains taboo in many parts the Muslim-majority country."

Seems like yet another fun country to visit. Indonesia has a significant gay population, but here we go again with bigots who manage to get in power wanting to criminalize it.

Apparently the attacks on LGBT people in Indonesia is getting to the point where some believe they need "safe" houses.
There also seems to be increasing numbers of government officials making hostile statements.
Not sure how this is affecting the expat community but it doesn't seem to be a good trend for anyone.

As far as I know, President Obama is the only national leader ever to have publicly spoken in favor of LGBT rights. The rest either keep silent, avoid the issue, or publicly spew their bigotry. While the world is slowly making life easier for gays, there are still too many in a position of power who would love to burn all of us at the stake.
