According to an article on Huffington Post, the Malaysian government is openly hostile to LGBT people.

I recall that some of the members of this forum have traveled there. How have your experiences been compared with what the article portrays?

I have traveled to Malaysia many times. Mostly Kuala Lumpur, Ipoh, Penang and Borneo. As a foreigner I have never noticed any issues or hostility. No problems having a friend visit my room, no ID is taken at reception and no strange looks or comments have ever been made anywhere from the hotel staff. I do not walk in to a hotel holding a guys hand, being discrete works well and the hotel staff to chose to ignore that anything might be happening. I think it is more a problem for locals meeting for sex together or promoting gay rights. The link below was interesting, do not leave a dildo in your room or the police may be called.

The only problem I've ever had personally was that I once nearly got raped by a hot Malay gay who assured me at the same time that he wasn't gay. ;)
