Coronation day for King set for May 4-6

January 1, 2019

The coronation ceremony for His Majesty the King will be held during May 4-6, the Royal Household Bureau announced on Tuesday.

On May 4, the King will grant an audience to the royal family members, privy councillors, cabinet members and senior government officials.

On the following day, His Majesty will be on a royal parade in Bangkok.

The King will appear on the balcony of Phutthaisawan Prasat Throne Hall at the Grand Palace for the celebrations on the next day, followed by an audience with diplomats at Chakri Maha Prasat Throne Hall to celebrate the occasion.

His Majesty plans a royal barge ceremony for the event during the royal krathin ceremony later this year.

The coronation ceremony is held after the National Legislative Assembly president acknowledged the accession to the throne by His Majesty in November 2016, making him the 10th King of the Chakri Dynasty.

Coronation of HM King Maha Vajiralongkorn to be held May 4-6: palace

January 1, 2019

An elaborate three-day coronation ceremony for HM King Maha Vajiralongkorn will be held May 4 to 6, the palace announced Tuesday, nearly two and half years after the passing of his revered father King Bhumibol Adulyadej.

HM King Maha Vajiralongkorn ascended the throne following his father's passing in October 2016, which ended a tumultuous seven-decade reign over the Southeast Asian kingdom.

In a televised announcement the Royal Household Bureau said the coronation will take place in early May.

"It's suitable time to hold the coronation in accordance to the tradition and for national celebration and joy of the people," the bureau said.

The "coronation ceremony" will be held on May 4 with an audience granted to "the royal family, privy councillors and cabinet members", it explained.

The following day a ceremony will "bestow the royal name" according to traditions governing the monarchy, then on May 6 the king will hold a "grand audience" with members of the public and diplomats.

Govt names May 6 as holiday

by Wassana Nanuam

30 Jan 2019

The government has announced May 6, the final day of His Majesty the King's three-day coronation, as a special national holiday .

That is the day the King will receive foreign diplomats and greet his people, Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha said on Tuesday.

A day off for both state and private sectors will ensure all events go smoothly, he said.

The King will pay respects to deities on May 2, followed by a ritual to carry phra suphannabap, a golden sheet with his name inscribed, to a palace on May 3.

The coronation will take place on the morning of May 4, a Saturday, before the King performs a liap phranakhon ceremony, a short trip arranged in a traditional procession in parts of Bangkok, the following day.

Though the most important events are held in this period, preparations for the ceremony will begin from early April and a post-coronation ceremony is also scheduled in May, Gen Prayut said.

The prime minister himself will preside over a ritual to have monks bless water collected from 108 sacred sources across the country, to be held between April 18 and 19 at Wat Suthat Thepphawararam in the capital.
