Short Time at the Casino

Post by Undaunted »

Army b/f came this morning asked if we could go to the casino in south Pattaya so we went. There were about 50 Thais playing various games in a very large room ( very large) there was money everywhere the b/f went to a seat to play I did not recognize the various games and I was the only non Thai, I asked a fellow if he spoke English he replied yes, I asked if he would explain the games to me he suggested I take a seat next to him and watch which I did, he seemed to fare very well. Frankly I am still not sure how the games work, but me and army boy enjoyed about 45 minutes and left none the worse for wear.

I thought gambling was illegal in Thailand. Seem to remember news articles where old ladies would get arrested for playing cards for 20 baht.

Don't forget the Bridge players who were not even playing for money, only socially, but were arrested anyway merely for playing cards at all. That case is still pending.

Even more strange, it is legal to sell playing cards in Thailand, but illegal to play card games with them. That's on my "I Don't Get It" list.

I don't know if this casino is legal or not, but I wouldn't risk going there without some sort of official confirmation that it is legal and gambling there is legal.

I believe it is legal. It has been open for a while and there is no question that the police know about it. Still, I have seen no official confirmation. I don't want to risk finding out the hard way that what I believe and what is actually the case are two different things.

I thought that in the end, the only charge that could be brought against them was possessing more than a permitted number of decks of cards. The BIB had to find some charge to save face.
One of the Bridge players arrested was the British Honorary Vice Consul for Pattaya.
Another thing that made it more bizzare was that later in the week the World Bridge Championships were being held in Bangkok.
