PHUKET - A landslide warning has been issued for this island province, with much of it already ravaged by flooding and heavy monsoon rain expected for the rest of this week.
Phuket governor Noraphat Plodthong said on Tuesday the southern meteorological centre forecast the southwest monsoon prevailing over the Andaman Sea, the Gulf of Thailand and the southern coast would bring heavy rain to several southern provinces between Aug 15 and 19.
Residents living in risk areas in Phuket, Ranong, Phangnga, Krabi, Trang and Satun provinces were advised to brace for runoff and possible flash floods during this period.
In Phuket, district and local authorities have warned that residents and tourists need to take caution.
Waves in the Andaman Sea would be 2-3 metres high during this period, the governor said. Small boats should stay ashore.
He has ordered local authorities to be on full alert for landslides in risk areas and to closely monitor the weather situation.
Heavy rain from Monday night to Tuesday morning caused flooding in several areas of Phuket.
In Muang district, floodwater 40-60cm was reported on Tuesday morning. In front of Super Cheap store on Thepkrasattri Road in Rassada area, floodwater rose to over 50cm, making it impassable for small vehicles.
