At current exchange rates, that's not very much - about US$ 425. Considering the number of motorbike accidents virtually every day, personally I think a farang would be out of his mind to drive a motorbike in Thailand without good, reliable, adequate insurance coverage.

I don't have or use a Motorcycle - but do have 1st class insurance on both my vehicles (car and pickup) - not only for liability and collision coverage, but for me most importantly bail bond coverage of 200,000 baht (Thais, as I understand it, can get by with 100,000 baht bail bond). That will at least get you released in most cases from Jail while the case wonders through the courts (or negotiation of compensation for the injured party that will be enough to make the criminal case go away).
