No matter what it costs to make or awards the aspiring film-maker hopes to garnish, that still doesn't explain how the exhibitor can survive with only 8 people in attendance. This is not box office boffo!

It's no wonder then that this is showing in so few theatres. The exhibitor stands to make more money with multiple screenings of Star Trek than he can showing gay Thai boy movies. Just how much is that theatre worth on a nightly basis? Distribution has always been a tough nut to crack. Not many want to take this risk. If it were this easy, we'd all be producing such films.

You want me to add it to my list?

Yes, GB, as far as I'm concerned, you can add this to the top of the list.

Most feature-length Thai movies with gay-ish themes end up on YouTube anyway, and almost always one can find an English subtitled version. Then all one needs is a big-ass flat screen, a laptop, and an HTML cable.
Normally I'd go for the theatre version simply for the sound quality and large screen, but if not in Bangkok or Shitsville (e.g. Hua Hin or Surin)
the outlying towns and provinces in Thailand rarely screen movies which are not already reasonably Big Deals.
Cheers ... ( and just one more reason why I love living in Thailand )

If the movies only manage limited cinema screenings, surely it would be to their makers advantage to get a subtitled DVD out as soon as possible after the cinema run ends. Before someone else does. It's been almost 12 months since Red Wine in the Dark Night was screened in cinemas with subtitles and in Pattaya and yet the only legitimate DVD available is through the Facebook page. YesAsia has the Thai version. I haven't really looked for a pirated version, though I'm sure they are out there. I know it is on the internet with subtitles. But I'm still unsure why an English subtitled DVD wasn't released with the Thai one. After all the subtitles were already on the movie.

I love the Thai BL TV Shows.
But you are correct. The actors in some and the story lines are much better.
I vote of "Love Sick" and "Hormones".
"Make It Right" is the best one showing now.
And "Part Time" is only so-so. But I still love Ngern!!!
The comparable videos from China are terrible...
Enough said...

As of last night, "Sweet Boy" is no longer showing in Bangkok. So how long is that, 7 nights?

This film was doomed. Even the popcorn machine wasn't working right.

Fini. The End.

Don't give up. Still showing in Udon Thani and Korat.
If it was only screening once a day at one cinema in Bangkok, it never stood a chance. Who knows, maybe it wasn't a very good movie, despite the eye candy.

What becomes of those movies after failing in the movie theaters? Do the vendors start selling them on DVDs? Do they go online somewhere?

Judging from the number of views this topic has received, there is quite a bit of interest in this and probably many similar movies. Where can those who are interested get them, especially if they are not in Thailand?

Glad to help. Go to http://myreadingmanga.info/gay-films/

As the title says, its a web page mainly for those interested in reading Japanese manga in various languages but there is a section for gay themed films and TV series/webisodes. As of this morning, there are 18 pages listed. Browse through and select those that you want. They can be viewed online and for free without downloading. Not every gay movie is there but among those listed are Red Wine in the Dark Night, My Hero (How to Win at Checkers Everytime), Love of Siam, Bangkok Story, My Bromance as well as Chinese, Japanese, European and American movies. Maybe one day Sweet Boy. Not all are Asian gay films. Also Club Friday Season 5, the TV series which featured the very cute Pchy from Love of Siam. A tip don't go looking for Club F season 1-4 thinking you have to start at the beginning, as each season has a different story with different actors and Season 5 is the Pchy one.
You'll even find the movie named after me. :)

I wouldn't label the film a failure. At least if your yardstick are realistic expectations. The expectations were low, and this time - unlike with a few other recent gay themed movies - they simply weren't exceeded. That's all.

If a movie released in Thailand becomes a box office success is largely determined by the social media attention (ideally, hype) it receives within the very first days. This one didn't seem to excite many. My suspicion is that the gay theme was overdone last year and that Sweet Boy looked too much like Waterboyy at first glance to pique people's interest.

The budget for making these types of films are very low , so success or not , in the end not a big loss. And maybe the director will learn and use a better script in his next movie.
