Re: Airbnb Sinking in Japan

I did not intend to put words into firecat69's mouth and so happily withdraw the "prediction". As I have stated I am new to Airbnb and perhaps I have some preconceived notions I need to revise. Certainly I was not happy with what's on offer and the prices in Taipei. On the other hand, havi...

Re: Airbnb Sinking in Japan

I’m not sure firecat69’s general prediction is likely to prove true. Fully 3/4 of all tourists to Japan are from just four markets - China, South Korea, Taiwan and Hong Kong. And these represent the fastest growing markets. My gut feel is few of these visitors will be the Airbnb market - at least no...

Re: Airbnb Sinking in Japan

"This stinks -- and that's an understatement," Airbnb said in a statement, adding it would fully refund cancelled reservations and was also creating a $10 million fund to compensate affected travellers. The popular holiday rental site had already suspended the listings of owners who had n...

Re: Thai Court Rules Against Airbnb

That is a very useful link and I feel certain parts are particularly significant. So I will quote from it. Most of the direct quotes are from Chris Potranandana, a partner at the law firm Strathmore Litigation and Asset Management, unless otherwise credited. In 2015, Bangkok’s Banglamphu district ra...

Re: Airbnb Sinking in Japan

I believe firecat69 is correct in suggesting Japan is not a good example. In a culture where very few Japanese invite even fellow Japanese into their homes, inviting in gaijin to pay to stay will be generally thought by a great many to be alien to the Japanese way of life, even though it makes money...

Re: Best Summer Month to go to Pattaya

What happens is torrential rains do occur - on occasion. They hardly ever last longer than 45 minutes to an hour and hardly ever more than once in the day. It usually does not rain later a second time. The only other point worth noting is that you can usually tell when it will start to rain heavily...

Re: Airbnb Sinking in Japan

Long before AirBnB there has been an extensive, well organized and relatively inexpensive licensed homestay programme in Japan. I expect that organization along with the cheaper business hotels will have been lobbying hard against AirBnB.

Re: Chiang Mai Update

Local transportation is now changed with the Uber sale to Grab Taxi. Excellent news. I often walked to avoid the tuk tuk mafia but the distances can be quite long. His Massage is close to Club One Seven and across the bridge from the huge Holiday Inn hotel. Walking from the centre was fine in decen...

Re: N Korea

Apologies for not getting Bolton's position correct. CNN today was speculating that he deliberately made the Libya example in an attempt to scupper the talks and that this is the reason he is not going to be in Singapore. If he's is not in fact there, wonder how long it will be before he is fired!

Re: Chiang Mai Update

It's about 3 years since I was in Chiang Mai which I visited three times that year because routing through Chiang Mai on V Air was the best and cheapest way to return from Taipei (sadly V Air no longer flies to Thailand). I find all the closures depressing - at least the closures of places which I h...
