Re: Canada senate revokes Suu Kyi's honorary citizenship

Isn't the problem that the UN can do precisely nothing? Any form of action requires the agreement of the Security Council. The UN Human Rights Panel has already produced a 400 page report in August detailing the extent of the atrocities. That recommended that top military officials in Myanmar be inv...

Re: Canada senate revokes Suu Kyi's honorary citizenship

I totally agree. And I condemn in the strongest possible terms what has happened to the Rohingya. But what can the UN or the world do to stop it? After all, they did nothing to stop the evacuation of the Palestinians from their lands. They have done nothing to stop the exodus of 6 million plus refug...

Re: Protecting valuables

Clearly they continue to be accepted in Thailand. I think it's not unreasonable to assume that at least some travellers to Thailand also have Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia and perhaps Myanmar on their trips. Want to use Amex travellers cheques in Ho Chi Minh? Good luck! As of 2014 hotels won't touch them ...

Re: Canada senate revokes Suu Kyi's honorary citizenship

Not quite, with respect. You suggested she is the one person who could speak out. My point is that she has not spoken out - not one word, whereas she was perfectly prepared to do so during her earlier long periods of house arrest. Also the words I used in my post to describe here were pretty damning...

Re: Protecting valuables

If someone has a need to travel with "loads of cash," that's what travelers checks are for . . . Traveling with a large amount of actual cash is not a bright idea, especially if you're going to keep it in your room and even more especially if you're going to be bringing strangers to your ...

Re: Canada senate revokes Suu Kyi's honorary citizenship

She is probably the one person in the country who could speak out against these atrocities and live to tell the tale. Surely the problem is that she has not said even one word in the year that this genocide has taken place. I realise she must face many restrictions but she was perfectly happy to sp...

The New Truth Behind Matthew Shepard’s Ghastly Gay Hate Crime Death

That truth is not nearly as palatable as the story we have so far heard. It all took place exactly 20 years ago. Has anyone forgotten how young, 22-year old blond-haired Matthew Shepard entered a bar purported to be gay-friendly in Laramie, Wyoming. Matthew was gay. Shortly afterwards Russell Hender...

Re: Yet Another Immigration Question

As has been stated several times before on various related threads over the years, what works in one Immigration office does not necessarily work in another. The interpretation of the law seems to be up to individual officers or supervisors. Posters here can give their experiences and the legal advi...

Re: 13 Thais Missing during Caving Expedition

Last night the prestigious Asia Society in New York awarded is 2018 Game Changer Award to the former Chiang Rai governor, Narongsak Osatanakorn. In his thank you speech in halting English, Khun Narongsak expressed his gratitude to all 10,000 who assisted in the rescue effort, Thai and international....

Re: Yet Another Immigration Question

An applicant with 800,000 in a fixed account for more than 3 months satisfies the requirement but is unable to add to his fixed deposit. So how can the fixed deposit be updated? I am told by the Immigration lawyer who helps me that a fixed account does not satisfy Bangkok Immigration. It has to be ...
