Re: Dengue Warning for Bangkok

Whilst it's worth being aware of this, we have:

Bangkok Population = 8.2million
Dengue Cases 5,800 (approx 0.1% per year, if we adjust for being part way through the year)
Deaths 5

The highest infection rate was in Nong Chok, which I imagine most of us go nowhere near.

Re: Planning trip in February / March ? Beware

Regarding the Chinese New Year, the alternative question is where best to be during that ? (if one IS on holiday in SE Asia) I'm just intending to book in advance & possibly avoid the places most popular with Chinese visitors. Maybe avoid Vietnam too. As for the election, I doubt that would be a...

Re: World's most popular Airline Route

I've never tried going through the middle east & would need one hell of a discount over a direct flight to go there.

I can think of a long list of disadvantages, but that's going off topic.

Re: World's most popular Airline Route

I would guess there are several different reasons for the routes being in the top 10. The Korean example looks like domestic tourism. Some of the Japanese cases might include a mix of people taking connecting flights for international travel & domestic travel. Hanoi to Ho Chi Minh, probably dome...

I doubt they would deny entry to females, but the website links look like it's marketed as gay.
100% boys in the photos. If they were pushing for the straight market, there would be some girls in the pics as well.

Re: ACH transfers from USA to Bangkok Bank -Alert!

We never get the XE mid-market rate, but as exchange rates are dynamic, we need something to measure the percentage loss of our transaction against. Hence the use of the XE rate. Of course the forex rate depends on the bank. If I go to Transferwise, I pay the ~£20 fee and get the XE rate If I go to ...

Re: ACH transfers from USA to Bangkok Bank -Alert!

Forgive me for using GBP as the example. As I write, the mid-market GBP rate is 42.5756. So for a zero- loss transaction, with £5,000 I should get 212,878 baht. However, the bank is likely to only give me something like 41.4. If I transfer £5000 to Thailand with my bank, I get 207,000. If I wanted t...

Re: ACH transfers from USA to Bangkok Bank -Alert!

Please note Transferwise have ZERO spread on their forex rate, so that $19 fee is all you pay. No other costs. If I transfer £5000 from a British bank, the bank fee is about £30. They also have a forex spread. The total cost of the transaction is a tad over 3% (to a certain ASEAN country). Does your...

Re: ACH transfers from USA to Bangkok Bank -Alert!

1 Go to Transferwise.com 2 Type in how much you want to transfer & select baht as the destination currency. This then shows how much will hit your account. This excludes any fees the receiving bank may charge, but as Transferwise send the money in local currency, in my case the receiving bank ch...

Re: ACH transfers from USA to Bangkok Bank -Alert!

Christian PFC recommended Transferwise for moving money to Thailand. I've not used it for sending cash to Thailand, but do send money to a certain ASEAN financial centre. The money is in my overseas account within 30 minutes and my total loss on fees & forex spread is just a fraction under 0.5%.
